China will stand by Bangladesh and cooperate in resolving the Rohingya issue, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir told a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.
Briefing reporters on the outcomes of the high-level meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Kabir said the Rohingya crisis was raised as one of Bangladesh’s major security concerns.
“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not compromise on Bangladesh’s sovereignty and territory. His government will always maintain a strong foreign policy and security position. But this will be done through assertive, firm diplomacy and dialogue,” Kabir said.
He said the Chinese Premier gave a “very positive indication” that China would assist in speaking with the Myanmar government and play its appropriate role in resolving the crisis.
The foreign adviser described Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit as “historic”, saying it would establish a dynamic relationship based on mutual respect.
“Many memorandums of understanding have been signed, including the construction of the China-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital. This visit will establish a new integrated relationship between Bangladesh and China based on mutual respect,” he said.
Kabir said Premier Li Qiang expressed “strong support” for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership and governance, adding that the Chinese government is optimistic that under his leadership, the nation will reach new heights.
“The prime minister’s foreign policy, regional cooperation, regional stability, and joint economic prosperity blueprint align with China’s regional vision and concept of international cooperation,” the adviser said.
Both leaders agreed this will usher in a new dawn in Bangladesh-China relations, forming a comprehensive strategic partnership encompassing trade, investment, education, and culture.
Kabir said within 48 hours of setting foot in China, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s influence and goodwill have begun to energise cooperation between the two countries.
“The world is now looking towards a new Bangladesh for leadership. The PM is seen as an influencer who will positively impact Bangladesh and regional relations for the welfare of the people of South and Southeast Asian countries,” he said.
Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin and Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon also spoke at the press conference.
