On February 23, 2026, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr. Yao Wen, met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka to officially extend an invitation for the Prime Minister to visit China. This meeting marked the first significant high-level engagement between the two countries since the new Bangladeshi government assumed office. While the exact dates of the visit are yet to be announced, Prime Minister Rahman expressed strong interest and assured that the trip would be arranged once domestic priorities are addressed. Historically, Bangladesh and China have maintained a relationship characterised by mutual trust and friendship. This latest interaction signals a promising new chapter in bilateral ties, reaffirming the long-standing foundation of strategic cooperation between the two nations.

One of the central pillars of China-Bangladesh cooperation has always been improving people’s livelihoods. The Teesta River Comprehensive Management Project has officially resumed, and China is fully prepared to begin implementation once Bangladesh finalises its plans. The first phase of the project is scheduled to start in early 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2029, with a total investment of $747 million, of which China is contributing $550 million. This ambitious project will address soil erosion and flood control, directly benefiting millions of residents along the river. Beyond technical and financial support, the project reflects China’s commitment to ensuring tangible benefits for local communities, demonstrating how infrastructure development can serve as a powerful instrument for sustainable growth and social stability.

Education cooperation between the two countries has also seen remarkable progress. The ‘Heart Connection – Yunnan Trip’ initiative has provided safe drinking water to more than 500 students and teachers at affiliated schools in Dhaka, ensuring their health and well-being. Additionally, China’s support extends to providing school supplies through Sinopec and establishing smart classrooms via Huawei. A key component of this programme is the training of 10,000 Bangladeshi students in Chinese language and technical skills. These educational initiatives not only address immediate needs but also create long-term opportunities for youth empowerment and cultural exchange. By building bridges in education, China and Bangladesh are cultivating a generation of students who can contribute to future bilateral engagement and regional cooperation.

Healthcare and infrastructure development remain critical areas of collaboration. China has assisted Bangladesh in constructing a 1,000-bed China-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, strengthening the country’s healthcare system and enhancing public health capacity. Infrastructure support includes upgrading highways, flyovers, and advancing the Teesta River project. Technological cooperation is also expanding, with joint projects in freshwater dolphin monitoring and drone technology transfer. These efforts underscore a multi-layered approach to bilateral cooperation, combining development, technology, and environmental protection. Such initiatives provide Bangladesh with critical tools to achieve sustainable development goals, while reinforcing the practical benefits of China’s strategic partnership.

Economically, China-Bangladesh cooperation continues to generate tangible results. The Padma Bridge, for example, contributes approximately 1.2% annually to Bangladesh’s GDP and has created around 550,000 jobs. Beyond serving as a vital transport link, the bridge symbolises the mutual benefits of bilateral collaboration and highlights the complementarity between the two economies. Investments such as these drive local employment, stimulate industrial growth, and provide Bangladesh with greater capacity to participate in regional trade networks. The combination of infrastructure, technology, and social welfare projects illustrates a cooperative model that is both sustainable and inclusive, emphasising mutual growth and shared prosperity.

From a diplomatic perspective, the recent high-level interaction and ongoing projects mark a significant step forward in China-Bangladesh relations. The new Bangladeshi government’s proactive engagement reflects a commitment to deepening cooperation, while China’s sustained support demonstrates the importance it attaches to Bangladesh’s development. Collaborative efforts in livelihoods, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and technology reinforce mutual trust and pave the way for stronger strategic ties. As Prime Minister Rahman’s visit to China approaches, the two countries are likely to explore broader and deeper areas of cooperation, moving beyond project-based collaboration to a more comprehensive strategic partnership.

Importantly, the China-Bangladesh partnership under the Belt and Road Initiative exemplifies a new model of international cooperation. It prioritises inclusive planning, sustainable development, and shared benefits, ensuring that projects deliver concrete improvements in people’s lives. Through infrastructure development, educational programs, healthcare support, and technology transfer, China and Bangladesh achieve economic growth alongside social progress. This model enhances public awareness and appreciation of bilateral cooperation, laying a strong foundation of popular support for continued engagement. It also provides a practical example for other nations in the region seeking mutually beneficial development partnerships.

Beyond tangible projects, the China-Bangladesh partnership also carries long-term cultural and strategic significance. Cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections have reinforced trust and understanding, creating fertile ground for high-level political and strategic cooperation. As policies of the new Bangladeshi government take shape, China’s support in education, healthcare, and infrastructure will help realise national development goals while strengthening the bilateral foundation for regional stability. These efforts demonstrate that strategic cooperation and people-centred initiatives can progress hand in hand, producing benefits that extend across society.

In conclusion, China-Bangladesh relations are entering a historic phase of development. High-level engagement, backed by practical initiatives in key sectors, signals a forward-looking partnership characterised by stability, mutual benefit, and deepening ties. Projects such as the Teesta River management, education initiatives, healthcare construction, and infrastructure upgrades highlight China’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development and improving the lives of its people. At the same time, these cooperative efforts enhance Bangladesh’s regional role and demonstrate how strategic partnerships can advance both economic and social objectives. Moving forward, both nations should continue to strengthen mutual trust, expand the scope of collaboration, and build on people-to-people connections to achieve higher levels of cooperation and shared prosperity.

This phase of cooperation highlights that China and Bangladesh are not only sustaining their traditional friendship but are also pioneering a new model of mutually beneficial partnership in South Asia. The new Bangladeshi government’s proactive approach, combined with China’s experience and practical support, provides a framework for long-term development, social welfare, and regional stability. As key projects are implemented and high-level interactions continue, the China-Bangladesh relationship is poised to serve as a model of successful collaboration, delivering real benefits to the people and strengthening regional prosperity.
