State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku has announced plans to elevate Chattogram Zoo to international standards.
He said the facility would be developed not just as a place of recreation, but also as a centre for animal conservation, research, education and raising public awareness about biodiversity.
The minister was speaking to journalists after visiting the zoo in the port city on Monday.
He stressed that future generations, particularly students from schools, colleges and universities, would gain practical knowledge about native species, their lifestyles, characteristics and environmental importance.
“The purpose of a modern zoo is not merely to display animals, but to ensure an integrated environment for conservation, research, education, environmental awareness and healthy recreation,” he said.
The modernisation plan will include new infrastructure, improved management, a visitor‑friendly environment and educational activities, he added.
During the visit, Chattogram‑7 lawmaker Hummam Kader Chowdhury, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Md Shahjaman Khan and senior officials from various government departments were present.
