A Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Chandpur has been relieved of his duties after sharing a distorted photo on Facebook that triggered clashes, leaving at least 20 people injured.
The incident took place in Gandharbapur North Union of Hajiganj upazila where Jamaat’s Union Ameer Maulana Ilias Hossain reportedly shared altered images of BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and its Central Committee’s Assistant International Affairs Secretary Barrister Rumeen Farhana from his personal Facebook account.
Following the post, violent clashes broke out on Friday morning between activists of BNP and Jamaat in Palishara village, injuring around 20 from both sides.
Confirming the development, Chandpur district Jamaat Secretary Advocate Md Shahjahan Mia said late Friday night that Ilias Hossain’s membership has been suspended for three months and he has also been removed from the post of Union Ameer. The decision was taken by District Jamaat Ameer Md Billal Hossain Miazi.
Shahjahan Mia explained that the distorted photo was mistakenly shared from Ilias Hossain’s account and later deleted. He claimed that the mobile phone was also used by his children, who may have inadvertently posted it.
He added that Ilias had expressed regret and was scheduled to sit for a discussion on Friday morning to resolve the matter but before that, Jamaat activists came under attack. Despite the Union president’s apology, the assault was truly unfortunate.
