To showcase the country’s century-old maritime heritage and preserve the legacy of historic vessels for future generations, the government has taken an initiative to introduce the iconic paddle steamer “PS Mahsud” as a tourism service on domestic river routes.
However, Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping, Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, inaugurated the steamer service on Saturday.
While speaking at the event, the Shipping Adviser said that PS Mahsud will serve as a rare blend of Bangladesh’s heritage and river-based tourism. Beginning 21 November, it will start regular operations as a tourism vessel on the Dhaka–Barishal river route, he added.
He also informed Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed great enthusiasm over the decision to relaunch the steamer. “PS Mahsud is not just a vessel; it is a living symbol of Bangladesh’s riverine culture and heritage,” the adviser said quoting Yunus.
“We want the new generation to see up close how rivers once served as the lifeline of communication and culture,” he added
Alongside PS Mahsud, several other old steamers including PS Ostrich, PS Lepcha, and PS Turn are also being considered for restoration, he added.
At the ceremony, Nurunnahar Chowdhury, secretary of the Ministry of Shipping, said the relaunch of the paddle steamer will attract both domestic and foreign tourists. Traditional Bangladeshi cuisine, musical performances, and a range of cultural experiences will be offered onboard for international visitors.
According to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation, the vessel’s modernisation has been carried out by preserving its original structure and historic design while fully upgrading the engine, safety features, and fire-safety systems. The steamer now includes modern cabins, tourist-friendly decks, and digital navigation tools.
Passengers will be able to enjoy a unique journey rich in riverine beauty, history, and heritage. To ensure safety, the steamer is equipped with international-standard safety gear, lifeboats, fire-safety systems, and GPS navigation. Its engine uses low-emission technology to help reduce river pollution.
Initially, the steamer will run once a week. It will depart from Dhaka’s Sadarghat at 8am every Friday and reach Barishal at night. Previously, steamers operated mainly at night, but BIWTC officials expect daytime travel to attract more tourists eager to enjoy the scenic rivers and riverbanks.
Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Lutfey Siddiqi, along with several senior secretaries, secretaries, and top government officials were present at the event.
