Rajinikanth’s action crime sequel ‘Jailer 2’ will premiere globally on Prime Video on 12 November, following a successful theatrical run in India and overseas.
According to Variety, the film has grossed $86 million so far, making it the highest-grossing Tamil-language film of all time, according to the report.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the sequel sees Rajinikanth reprise his role as retired prison officer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Anirudh Ravichander returns to compose the music.
The film features cameos by Malayalam star Mohanlal, Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan, Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi and Kannada actor Shivarajkumar. The wider cast includes SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu.
The story picks up after the events of the first film, as a powerful crime syndicate with political connections and an international network threatens Muthuvel’s family. Pulled out of retirement, he must confront returning enemies and shifting alliances to protect his loved ones.
Nelson said the team wanted to build on the audience’s connection with the central character while raising the stakes in the sequel. He also welcomed the film’s move to streaming, saying it would allow audiences worldwide to watch both instalments of Muthuvel Pandian’s story.
With ‘Jailer 2’, Rajinikanth holds the top three positions on the all-time Tamil box-office chart. The sequel leads the ranking, followed by ‘2.0’ and the original ‘Jailer’. His film ‘Coolie’ occupies fifth place.
The first ‘Jailer’ is already available on Prime Video. The sequel will stream in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada across India and more than 240 countries and territories.
