Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has said that drafting an election code of conduct is not the real challenge; the crucial factor is how responsibly political parties comply with it.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on the fourth day of the commission’s ongoing dialogue with political parties, he said a peaceful and acceptable national election will require the sincere cooperation of all parties.
“The Election Commission is not alone; only through the collective efforts of all parties is it possible to present the people with a good election,” he said.
The CEC informed participants that the election code of conduct has already been finalised and that its strict enforcement will be essential to ensure a fair vote.
Representatives from seven political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party, attended the day’s first session of discussions.
Nasir Uddin said the commission has been engaging in discussions with political parties since taking office, and a broader dialogue has been organised this time ahead of the national polls.
He added that recommendations from the Reform Commission were incorporated into the code of conduct and that feedback from parties, citizens and various organisations was considered before finalising the document.
Addressing the declining voter turnout witnessed over the past 15 years, he said political leaders must play a significant role in restoring public confidence.
“Past experience shows that the role of political parties in making an election successful is greater than that of law enforcement agencies. Since political parties have more influence at the grassroots level, they can encourage voters more effectively,” the CEC said.
He added that a peaceful election is possible if political parties, voters, the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies work together.
