Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that cases filed after 5 August 2024, which named ordinary and innocent people as defendants for personal gain, will be thoroughly verified.
He noted that some opportunistic individuals had filed such cases, which have now come under government review.
Speaking at a briefing at the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat on Tuesday, the minister stressed the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
“We will make every effort to ensure that no one becomes a victim of baseless or harassing cases,” he said.
Salahuddin Ahmed said approval has already been granted to withdraw 1,202 politically motivated cases filed against opposition party leaders and citizens from various professions during the 17-year tenure of the previous government.
Earlier, 1,006 similar cases had been cleared for withdrawal.
He clarified that cases involving murder, drugs, weapons, explosives, and crimes against women and children are excluded from the withdrawal process.
“Further initiatives will be taken to withdraw additional politically motivated cases. Each case will be carefully examined to ensure it is genuinely political in nature,” the minister added.
To prevent misuse, a verification committee will be set up, and a final decision on these cases is expected within the next few days.
