World Cup celebrations in the Mexican resort of Cabo San Lucas turned violent on Wednesday night when a car drove into a crowd of fans gathered to celebrate Mexico’s 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic, injuring 17 people.

Los Cabos city hall confirmed in a statement that all 17 received medical treatment, including the driver, who was arrested at the scene. Multiple videos verified by Reuters show a black car surrounded by supporters wearing Mexico’s national team shirts before accelerating into the crowd, throwing people into the air and crashing into bollards.

Further footage verified by Reuters shows the crowd pulling someone from the vehicle and attacking them, while multiple injured people lay on the ground.

Acting Mayor Jose Manuel Larumbe expressed his solidarity with those affected. “I would like to express our deepest solidarity with the people affected and their families following the unfortunate events that occurred tonight,” he said, adding that authorities would keep the public informed as investigations continue.

Cabo San Lucas, located on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, is one of the country’s most popular luxury tourist destinations and one of the two principal cities within the Municipality of Los Cabos, alongside San Jose del Cabo.

The incident occurred as celebrations erupted across Mexico following the team’s victory, which sealed top spot in Group A and confirmed their place in the round of 32 as co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup.
