Cape Verde continued their dream start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-2 draw against Uruguay on Sunday in Miami.
The African side came from behind and earned another famous result after holding Spain in their opening match.
Kevin Pina made history when he scored Cape Verde’s first ever World Cup goal in the 21st minute. His free kick beat the Uruguay wall and gave his side a deserved lead.
Uruguay responded before the break. Maxi Araujo scored the equaliser and Agustin Canobbio added another goal late in the first half to put the South Americans ahead 2-1.
Cape Verde refused to give up.
Helio Varela came off the bench and changed the match. The forward took advantage of a poor pass from Mathias Olivera and spotted goalkeeper Fernando Muslera off his line. He calmly scored to level the match and secure another valuable point for his country.
The result leaves both Cape Verde and Uruguay on two points in Group H.
Cape Verde, who are playing in their first World Cup, now have a real chance of reaching the knockout stage. They will face Saudi Arabia in their final group match.
Uruguay also remain in danger of an early exit. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have drawn both of their matches and now need a strong result against Spain in their last group game.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha once again played a key role. The 40-year-old produced several important saves and helped his team withstand late pressure from Uruguay.
After the final whistle, Cape Verde’s players celebrated with their fans as if they had won the match. Their remarkable World Cup journey continues and another surprise may still be on the way.
