Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Call of Duty film will be based on the popular Modern Warfare games, director and co-writer Peter Berg has confirmed, states Variety.
Berg revealed the news during the “Call of Duty in Culture” panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City while promoting the October release of Modern Warfare 4.
The announcement marks the first major story detail since Paramount unveiled the project in September 2025.
Written by Taylor Sheridan, the film remains untitled.
Although the studio has not revealed its plot, Berg confirmed that the adaptation will take place in the Modern Warfare universe.
Launched in 2003, the Call of Duty franchise has expanded to include more than 30 mainline games.
The Modern Warfare series debuted in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, shifting the franchise from its original World War II setting to contemporary military conflicts.
The games primarily follow Captain John Price and his elite Task Force 141 as they battle terrorist leader Vladimir Makarov across the Middle East.
The storyline will continue later this year with the release of Modern Warfare 4, which centres on a war between North and South Korea.
Paramount Pictures has scheduled the film for release on 30 June 2028.
The studio is producing the project in collaboration with Activision.
Paramount’s multi-year agreement with Activision extends beyond a single film and could pave the way for a wider Call of Duty cinematic and television universe in the future.
