Electric car sales in Bangladesh grew 611% to 469 units in 2025
Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD is stepping up its push in Bangladesh as demand for electric vehicles (EVs) begins to gain traction, driven by fuel uncertainty and rising consumer interest.
The company has put more than 500 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on local roads, marking a shift from niche adoption to emerging market demand.
Industry data show EV sales rose from 66 units in 2024 to 469 units in 2025, a 611 per cent increase led by BYD.
BYD Bangladesh Chief Marketing Officer Imtiaz Nawsher said the company is working to build local demand and position EVs as a practical alternative.
“Our goal is to shift consumption patterns and encourage full EV adoption,” he said, adding that buyers are increasingly viewing EV ownership as a modern and reliable option compared with reconditioned vehicles.
Rising fuel costs and supply disruptions linked to the Middle East crisis have heightened interest in EVs, as consumers seek more predictable mobility solutions.
BYD said its strategy focuses on introducing globally recognised models while building trust among local buyers.
“Consumers are willing to invest in EVs as fuel prices rise and environmental awareness grows,” said BYD Bangladesh Chief Marketing Officer Imtiaz Nawsher.
The company said its early success is also drawing attention from other global automakers exploring the Bangladesh market.
Industry insiders said existing policy support, including reduced customs duties, has yet to be fully implemented.
“BYD’s growth shows the market is ready if structural barriers are addressed,” said Nawsher.
He said lower registration fees, improved tax measures, and expansion of charging infrastructure would accelerate adoption.
Limited charging infrastructure remains a key challenge. BYD has installed eight public charging stations across the country and is investing in facilities along highways and at hotels.
The company is also setting up charging points at customers’ homes to build confidence in EV use.
Despite low overall penetration compared with regional peers, BYD’s growing sales indicate a potential shift in the market.
Globally, BYD has sold more than 3 million vehicles and exports to over 70 countries. Industry data show it surpassed Tesla in EV deliveries in 2025, strengthening its position in the global market.
BYD said it plans to introduce more value-for-money models in Bangladesh to expand its reach and support wider adoption of electric mobility.
