A special prayer was held in memory of eminent educationist, former BUET Vice-Chancellor and distinguished engineer Mosharraf Hossain Khan (MH Khan).
The programme was organised by the Bangladesh Society of Mechanical Engineers (BSME) at the BUET Council Building on Saturday evening, reads a press release.
Speakers at the event paid tribute to the late Prof MH Khan’s distinguished career, outstanding contributions to education and engineering, and his significant role in serving the nation.
Among those who spoke were BUET Pro-Vice-Chancellor Muhammad Shariful Islam; BSME President, former Professor of BUET’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, and former Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), Muhammad Fazley Elahi; AKM Sadrul Islam; Professor of BUET’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Muha Mahbubur Razzak; and Mohammad Ali.
Former Professor of BUET’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Dipak Kanti Das, former Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering Shamimuzzaman Bosunia, former Professor of the PMRE Department M Tamim, and Engineer Nadima Jahan Tania also shared their memories of the late academic.
The speakers described MH Khan as a visionary educationist, distinguished engineer and exemplary individual.
They said the nation had lost a farsighted academic and an outstanding engineer, adding that his death was an irreparable loss to engineering education, higher education and the professional community of the country.
They also highlighted his remarkable contributions to education, engineering and academic administration throughout his career.
He taught at BUET’s Department of Mechanical Engineering for 35 years and served with distinction as head of the Department, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Vice-Chancellor of BUET from 1987 to 1991.
Later, in 1995, he joined Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) as its founding Vice-Chancellor and played a key role in establishing the institution’s academic foundation.
He also served on several national education commissions and technical development committees.
From 1991 to 1995, he was a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), where he made significant contributions to the development of higher education and engineering education in Bangladesh.
The speakers said Prof Dr Engr M H Khan was a visionary educationist and engineer known for his knowledge, wisdom, integrity and strong moral values.
They noted that his dedication, leadership and contributions would be remembered for years by the engineering community and the country’s higher education sector.
They also recalled that he was humble, kind, compassionate and generous in his personal life, and that his warmth and humanity earned him deep respect and affection from colleagues, students and well-wishers.
Mosharraf Hossain Khan passed away at 4:am on 7 July, 2026, while undergoing treatment at BIRDEM General Hospital in Dhaka. He was 93.
Special prayers were offered for the eternal peace of his departed soul, and deep condolences and sympathy were expressed to his bereaved family members.
