The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) has approved leasing 120 acres of land at the Jamuna Bridge site to North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) for the development of a 55-megawatt solar power plant, as part of efforts to expand renewable energy generation on its properties.
The decision was taken at the authority’s 117th board meeting on Thursday, chaired by Road Transport and Bridges Adviser and BBA Chairman Sheikh Robiul Alam, according to a statement.
The board also approved preparing a master plan to install solar power facilities across assets under the Bangladesh Bridge Authority to support the government’s green energy agenda.
Another key decision was to revise the rehabilitation policy for families affected by the Dhaka Elevated Expressway project by amending the existing framework for allocating flats in rehabilitation villages.
The board also approved reinstating an agreement for operating the BIAM Laboratory School at Diabari in Uttara.
To strengthen technical capacity, the authority decided to establish the Centre for Bridge Research and Training (CBRT) to promote research, professional training and skills development in the construction and maintenance of major bridge infrastructure.
The meeting further approved amending the Bangladesh Bridge Authority Officers’ and Employees’ Welfare Trust Rules, 2010 by replacing the term “annual scholarship” with “annual education grant assistance” to better reflect the nature of the benefit.
During the meeting, Bangladesh Bridge Authority Executive Director and Bridge Division Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf presented the agenda and reviewed progress in implementing decisions taken at previous board meetings.
Sheikh Robiul Alam directed officials to ensure the swift and transparent implementation of the board’s decisions, saying the government remains committed to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly transport infrastructure.
