Independent candidate and former MP Syed AK Ekramuzzaman announced on Thursday that he is withdrawing his nomination for the Brahmanbaria-1 (Nasirnagar) seat in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.
In a video message released in the evening, Ekramuzzaman confirmed his decision and sought prayers to remain by the side of the people in all circumstances.”
Earlier, on January 2, his nomination had been declared valid by the district returning officer and deputy commissioner, Sharmin Akter Jahan, following verification.
Ekramuzzaman, a prominent industrialist, had been associated with the BNP for more than 20 years and previously served as an adviser to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He was expelled from the party for contesting the 12th National Parliamentary Election in 2024 as an independent candidate, defying party directives.
After winning that election, he joined the Awami League in a ceremony at Dhaka’s Boat Club on 13 February, 2024, in the presence of then Minister of Housing and Public Works Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury.
Ekramuzzaman has also stated that he submitted his resignation to the Awami League office. Following the political upheaval, seven cases have been filed against him, all of which remain under investigation.
