BRAC Bank has introduced Bangladesh’s interoperable Bangla QR payment system at BRAC University, allowing students and staff to pay tuition fees, cafeteria bills, retail purchases and other campus expenses through a single QR code.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman inaugurated the initiative on Thursday as part of the central bank’s “Cashless Bangladesh” agenda. The system allows customers of participating banks and mobile financial service providers to make instant payments using the same QR code.
BRAC Bank Managing Director and CEO Tareq Refat Ullah Khan described it as Bangladesh’s first cashless university campus, saying digital payments could make transactions faster, simpler and more secure.
BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Syed Ferhat Anwar welcomed the initiative but said wider internet access and smart device availability would be needed to ensure inclusion.
The governor later held an interactive session with students on Bangla QR, digital payments and Bangladesh Bank’s efforts to promote a cashless economy.
Bangladesh Bank Payment Department-1 Director ANM Moinul Kabir, Payment Systems Department-2 Director Md Sharafat Ullah Khan, BRAC University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Arshad Mahmud Chowdhury, Treasurer Ariful Islam, Dean of BRAC Business School Mohammad Mujibul Haque, faculty members and students attended the programme.
