The government has decided to halt passenger boarding from small boats to launches during the Eid travel period in an effort to prevent overcrowding and enhance safety on waterways.
State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan announced the decision on Thursday after inspecting passenger services, safety measures, and overall conditions at Sadarghat.
He said the authorities will take a strict stance to stop overloading on launches, emphasising that boarding passengers from boats will be completely banned. Law enforcement agencies will remain on high alert to ensure the directive is strictly enforced.
The minister urged passengers to follow regulations and prioritise their own safety during the busy Eid travel season.
He also revealed plans to introduce a more organized system for passenger movement in the future, possibly by establishing designated facilities away from the main terminal to curb unregulated boat and launch operations.
Addressing concerns about excessive fares, the minister said no complaints of overcharging have been received so far. He added that fares have already been reduced by 10 percent to ease travel costs during Eid and that the revised rates are being maintained.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with officials present on the ground and in regular contact with passengers. The minister urged anyone with complaints about extra charges to come forward with evidence.
