BNP has decided to expand its organisational activities across the country to facilitate the holding of its National Council as soon as possible. The decision was reached during a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee, held on Saturday night at the Chairman’s office in Gulshan.
Presided over by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the meeting began at 8:40pm and lasted for two and a half hours.
Following the session, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the discussions focused on broadening political and organisational reach to prepare the party for an upcoming council.
“We believe that we will try to move towards the council very quickly,” Fakhrul said.
However, when questioned on a specific timeframe, the secretary general noted that a minimum of a few months would be required for preparation before a date could be finalised. The BNP’s last National Council, its sixth, was held on 19 March 2016.
According to relevant sources, Tarique provided “direction-oriented” guidance during the meeting.
In addition to council preparations, the committee discussed the national fuel crisis stemming from the conflict in the Middle East, constitutional reform, and the ongoing street movements by opposition parties demanding the implementation of July Charter.
The meeting also addressed reports of party activists visiting various ministries.
Fakhrul further informed that the Prime Minister sought the Standing Committee’s opinions on the government’s programmes over the last 47 days, with members offering specific suggestions.
The meeting was attended in person by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku, and AZM Zahid Hossain.
Members Nazrul Islam Khan and Selima Rahman joined the proceedings virtually.
This marks the first meeting of the Standing Committee since 9 January. Sources say the reflections of the directions given in this meeting will be visible in the party’s actions shortly.
