NCP Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Md Nahid Islam has accused the BNP of distancing itself from public expectations soon after assuming power, alleging that the party has “forgotten the people” and betrayed their trust.
He made the remarks while speaking as a special guest at the tri-annual national conference of the Labour Welfare Federation held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday.
In his address, Nahid Islam highlighted the role of working-class people in major political movements throughout the country’s history, saying workers had repeatedly sacrificed their lives for national causes.
He said workers played a central role in the 1947 independence movement, the 1971 Liberation War, and subsequent mass uprisings, including the 2024 uprising, where “most of the martyrs were labourers.”
The NCP leader alleged that BNP came to power “on the blood of workers” but quickly deviated from public expectations.
“The government formed has betrayed the aspirations of a new Bangladesh within a month. They have ignored the public mandate and disrespected the outcome of the referendum. This is an anti-people government,” he said.
He also accused BNP of failing to honour commitments related to turning interim government ordinances into laws and implementing reforms.
Warning of political consequences, Nahid Islam said broken promises would not be accepted by the people.
“There will be no positive outcome from politics of betrayal. A mass movement will be built to ensure workers’ rights and implement reforms,” he added.
