The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has finalised its candidates for four of the six parliamentary constituencies in Brahmanbaria ahead of the upcoming 13th national election.
However, barrister Rumeen Farhana, one of the party’s high-profile and much-discussed figures, has not been nominated.
Although Rumeen had expected the party ticket for the Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj) seat, BNP has left that constituency vacant for now, reportedly reserving it for an ally within the opposition coalition.
The list of nominated candidates was announced on Monday evening by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
For Brahmanbaria-1 (Nasirnagar), the party has nominated MA Hannan, president of the Nasirnagar upazila unit BNP. In Brahmanbaria-3 (Sadar and Bijoynagar), district unit BNP president Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal received the party ticket.
For Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba and Akhaura), BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Mushfiqur Rahman has been nominated, beating out local hopefuls including district joint secretary and Ziaur Rahman Foundation member Engineer Nazmul Huda Khandaker and district unit BNP member Kabir Ahmed Bhuiyan, the elder brother of Abdur Rahman Sani, a close associate of acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
In Brahmanbaria-5 (Nabinagar), the nomination went to Nabinagar upazila BNP president Md Abdul Mannan, though many had expected Kazi Nazmul Hossain Taposh, son of former MP Kazi Anwar Hossain, to secure the seat.
The party has yet to announce a candidate for the Brahmanbaria-6 (Bancharampur) constituency, although several BNP leaders, including former lawmaker MA Khalek, were hopeful of securing the party nomination.
Party insiders believe this seat, too, may be reserved for an alliance partner, with speculation suggesting it could be offered to Junaid Saki, chief coordinator of Ganasamhati Andolan.
Commenting on the nominations, Brahmanbaria district BNP general secretary Sirajul Islam said, “The decision of the party’s acting chairman is final. He has thoroughly analysed every aspect before selecting the candidates. We will work unitedly for those who have been nominated.”
