Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday announced BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the presidential nominee.
The announcement came at a BNP standing committee meeting at the Secretariat, chaired by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
At the same time as becoming a presidential candidate, Fakhrul has resigned from his posts as BNP Secretary General and member of the party’s National Standing Committee.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi disclosed the information to journalists in front of the Prime Minister’s Office at the Secretariat.
Rizvi said, “On behalf of the BNP, I am pleased to announce that our Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has become the party’s presidential candidate.”
Several BNP leaders were present at the briefing.
However, a BNP delegation will go to the Election Commission around 1:30pm to submit the party’s nomination paper for the presidency.
The deadline for submitting nomination papers in the 23rd presidential election is Thursday (13 August).
According to the Election Commission schedule, nomination papers can be filed between 10am and 4pm that day. Scrutiny will take place on 16 August, while 18 August is the last date for withdrawal. Voting will be held on 20 August from 2pm to 5pm in the session chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad.
BNP has collected two nomination papers, while the 11‑party opposition alliance has collected one.
On 24 July, the 22nd President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned. The EC later announced the schedule, setting 20 August for voting.
