A local BNP activist was killed in Jashore’s Chougachha upazila and his body was recovered from a canal under Singhajhuli union on Sunday afternoon, police said.
The deceased, Atiar Rahman, 42, was found with his throat slit in a water channel near Bergo Bindapur baor area.
Police have detained a 30-year-old man, Osman, for questioning in connection with the killing.
According to police and family sources, Atiar Rahman was a resident of Laskarpur village under Chougachha Sadar Union.
He was physically challenged and worked as a guard at the local baor (wetland) while also managing irrigation through a deep tube well nearby.
Family members said he left home in the morning as usual but did not return.
Later in the afternoon, his body was discovered floating under water hyacinths in a canal connected to the baor area by his nephew Hasan, 26.
Police were informed, following which a team led by Chougachha Police Station recovered the body and sent it for autopsy.
Relatives alleged that Osman, son of Hafizur from Fatehpur village, was initially beaten by locals before being taken into police custody for questioning.
Chougachha Upazila BNP President MA Salam said Atiar was an active party worker and confirmed his family’s association with the BNP.
He also claimed there had been previous disputes over the baor area.
Police said the victim bore multiple injury marks consistent with sharp weapons on his throat, abdomen, and under the right armpit.
Officer-in-Charge Mamunur Rashid said an investigation was underway to identify those involved and bring them to justice.
