A BNP activist was hacked to death allegedly by a local drug dealer and his associates in the capital’s Sabujbagh area on Tuesday evening.
The victim, Palash, 36, was an activist of the BNP’s Sabujbagh Ward‑5 unit. The attack took place around 7:30pm in Rajarbagh Water Pump Lane.
Sub‑Inspector Saifur Rahman of Sabujbagh Police Station confirmed the incident, saying a police team was working at the scene to collect further details.
According to Palash’s friend Md Hira, the assailants led by Royal, a local drug trader cut off both of Palash’s wrists and stabbed him repeatedly before fleeing.
Palash was first taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 10pm.
The killing is believed to be linked to a dispute between Palash and Royal a week earlier. Hira said Palash had confronted Royal after he secured the release of a man named Sabuj, detained for rickshaw theft.
Palash was also known to be associated with Liton Khan, president of BNP’s Sabujbagh Ward‑5 unit.
Palash’s sister, Josna Akter, said the family hails from Sonapur village in Raipur, Lakshmipur, but now lives in Madartek Chowrasta, Sabujbagh. Palash married Mariam Akter six months ago. Formerly a private car driver, he had recently been unemployed.
Josna demanded justice for her brother’s killing.
