A court has placed an alleged member of the “Bhua Aziz” syndicate on a two-day remand in connection with a case involving unlawful entry into a Gulshan house, extortion of Tk20 lakh, and destruction of trees.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order on Sunday after the investigating officer sought a 10-day remand for the accused, Md Yusuf (61), state counsel Shamsud Doha Sumon said.
The investigating officer told the court that Yusuf is a member of a notorious fraudster and land grabbing syndicate associated with the group known as “Bhua Abdul Aziz Khan”, which has been attempting to seize various houses in Gulshan through forgery.
State counsel said “Bhua Aziz” has already given a confessional statement in court admitting his guilt and false identity. The syndicate targets upscale Gulshan houses for extortion, and taking Yusuf on remand is essential for further investigation.
The defence lawyer sought cancellation of the remand.
According to investigation sources, Yusuf and his associate Ismail (55) had long been attempting to seize houses in Gulshan by creating forged documents. Earlier, a person named Hanif Howlader, using the identity of “Abdul Aziz Khan”, tried to take over a house using a fake NID and forged documents. CID identified him as a fraudster in 2022, and he gave a confessional statement in court on 11 April.
The case stems from an incident on 1 March at house number 15 on Road 127 in Gulshan-1. According to the FIR, 20-25 unidentified persons led by Yusuf and Ismail entered the house, halted construction work, vandalised the boundary wall, and demanded Tk20 lakh from the house manager.
They also threatened to kill an on-duty Ansar member and workers if the money was not paid and cut down several mango and jackfruit trees inside the property.
The house manager, Abu Shikdar, filed the case with Gulshan Police Station on 3 March.
The investigating officer said interrogating Yusuf is necessary to identify the mastermind, arrest absconding accused Ismail, and uncover others behind the crime. Authorities are also investigating whether the syndicate possesses more illegal weapons or has additional associates.
