The local administration has imposed Section 144 in Tarakanda upazila headquarters of Mymensingh following separate protest programmes announced by two rival factions of the BNP, amid concerns over a deterioration in law and order.
According to sources in the upazila administration, the two BNP groups called for protest marches at the same time and venue at Tarakanda bus stand and adjoining areas on Sunday. A subsequent police report warned of a risk of clashes, threats to public safety, and possible loss of life and property.
In response, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Md Aminul Islam issued the order under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. The restriction will remain in force from 12pm to 8pm on Sunday, covering the bus stand area and surrounding localities.
Under the order, all types of meetings, rallies, protest marches, mass gatherings and the use of loudspeakers have been prohibited. The carrying of firearms and locally made weapons, including machetes, has also been banned, along with sticks and other potentially harmful objects. The assembly or movement of five or more people in the designated areas has been barred.
The directive further stated that any violation will be treated as a punishable offence under Section 188 of the Penal Code, 1860, and legal action will be taken accordingly. However, the restrictions will not apply to government officials and employees engaged in maintaining law and order.
The administration said law enforcement agencies have been put on alert to ensure public safety and enforce the order strictly.
