Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that the government is considering the introduction of certificates and other incentives, alongside existing medals, to recognise the heroic and courageous acts of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel.
The minister said he would hold discussions with BGB Director General (DG) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui to initiate the necessary steps regarding this matter.
He made the announcement on Monday afternoon during a press conference held at Shaheed Captain Ashraf Hall in Pilkhana, following a meeting with senior officials and members of the BGB.
Responding to queries, Salahuddin emphasised that BGB members perform their duties at the borders at great personal risk.
He noted that while medals are already awarded annually as part of the force’s regular process to honour bravery, the government intends to expand this recognition.
Drawing a comparison with the police, Salahuddin mentioned that they also receive annual medals. However, he explained that as the police are a public-facing force, they have an additional system of rewards and reprimands to incentivise good conduct and discourage wrongdoing.
“Regarding the BGB, if we can arrange for certificates and other measures alongside medals for recent heroic and courageous deeds at the border, I will speak with the DG. It will be a positive step,” Salahuddin said.
He expressed his hope that such an initiative would serve to further boost the morale of the force and encourage them in the dedicated discharge of their duties.
