Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has deployed more than 37,000 of its members across the country to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair environment for the upcoming 13th parliamentary election and referendum.
BGB Dhaka Sector Commander Colonel SM Abul Ehsan confirmed the extensive security arrangements during a press briefing at Mirpur’s National Swimming Complex on Saturday. He had earlier inspected multiple temporary election base camps within the capital.
He said that the force now operates in 489 of the 495 upazilas, with an independent deployment covering 61 border upazilas. To maintain stringent security, BGB units will conduct both mobile patrols and static duties across all 300 parliamentary constituencies.
“Each upazila is expected to have between two and four platoons on duty. In addition, the country’s entire 4,427-kilometer border will remain under strict surveillance throughout the election period,” he added.
Detailing the Dhaka Sector’s plan, he stated that 134 platoons will operate from 42 temporary base camps. This deployment will secure 51 constituencies spread across nine districts and four city corporations.
Dhaka Battalion (BGB 5 and 26), Narayanganj Battalion (BGB 62), and Gazipur Battalion (BGB 63) will execute these duties.
To ensure a rapid response to any incident, specialised units including the Rapid Action Team, Quick Response Force, and a Helicopter Unit will remain on high alert. A specialised K-9 Dog Squad Unit will also be deployed for targeted search operations.
BGB authorities confirmed that all personnel have undergone specialised election training to perform their duties with professionalism and impartiality.
The force will utilise modern equipment such as body-worn cameras, night vision devices, metal detectors, armoured personnel carriers, and advanced communication systems to enhance transparency and operational effectiveness.
A dedicated monitoring cell has been established at battalion and sector headquarters to oversee the election situation continuously. On the election day, 12 February, the personnel will conduct area patrols, man checkpoints at strategic locations, and perform searches on vehicles and individuals to prevent any attempts at sabotage or unrest.
BGB reemphasised its commitment to maintaining strict political neutrality and adhering to directives from the government and the Election Commission, underscoring its role in providing a level playing field for all participants.
Officials expressed confidence that, through the combined efforts of the government, the EC, law enforcement agencies, and the public, the election will be conducted in a peaceful and celebratory atmosphere.
