Bear Grylls is returning to BBC One with a new reality programme that shifts the focus from survival to reconciliation, as he supports families trying to repair fractured relationships amid the dramatic terrain of Wales.
Titled Wild Reckoning, the series follows relatives, partners and siblings as they step away from modern routines and comforts to face demanding tasks designed to address long-standing emotional rifts.
Set against the harsh backdrop of the Welsh wilderness, the show blends physical endurance with guided reflection to help participants confront unresolved tensions.
Grylls described the project as one of the most impactful undertakings of his career, explaining that it centres on “real lives” and “real emotions.”
He says the unforgiving outdoor environment of north Wales plays a crucial role, creating conditions where “there’s nowhere to hide” and people are pushed to deal honestly with their problems.
Each episode sees Grylls make the journey from his private island, St Tudwal’s West, off the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd, to the mainland, where he works alongside mediators, psychologists and survival specialists.
Together, they support those taking part as they navigate both the landscape and their personal struggles.
Across its 16 episodes, the series explores disputes shaped by bereavement, broken trust, rivalry between siblings and feelings of neglect.
By removing everyday distractions like mobile phones and easy exits, the programme encourages participants to stay present, listen carefully and engage with difficult conversations.
Grylls is clear that deeply rooted issues, such as childhood trauma, cannot be fixed in a matter of days.
Still, he hopes the experience offers a starting point for healing and helps people begin reshaping how they relate to one another.
He adds that meaningful change often begins with something simple but challenging, sitting quietly together, truly listening without conflict, and openly expressing the wish to reconnect.
