A green makeover could be in the works for Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, with KRATOS Energy Ltd set to meet the Bangladesh Cricket Board on August 23 to discuss a proposal for rooftop solar panels, solar carports and future electric vehicle charging facilities at the Mirpur venue, according to a source close to the development.
The proposal could help BCB reduce the stadium’s electricity costs without any upfront capital investment, the source said.
The meeting, which will be attended by several BCB top officials, comes after KRATOS submitted a Letter of Intent seeking access to conduct a preliminary site survey and feasibility study for the proposed project. The company plans to carry out technical feasibility and electrical grid assessments, as well as structural assessments for the proposed solar PV parking facilities.
Under the proposed model, BCB would make no upfront capital investment while potentially benefiting from lower electricity costs, rental or revenue-sharing income and reduced dependence on conventional grid electricity. Surplus solar power could also be supplied to the national grid, subject to regulatory approvals.
The initiative would make productive use of the stadium’s rooftop and parking areas, provide shaded parking for visitors, support future EV infrastructure and reduce the venue’s carbon footprint. KRATOS also sees the project as a potential model for similar initiatives across other BCB-owned stadiums.
As part of the broader Green Cricket Stadium Initiative, a preliminary estimate suggests that around 130,000 square feet of available rooftop space could accommodate a solar PV system with an installed capacity of approximately 1 MWp. However, the final usable area, system capacity and electricity generation will depend on the findings of the feasibility study.
Mirpur stadium currently does not have a complete rooftop structure suitable for immediate solar PV installation. The proposal will therefore require preliminary architectural, structural and technical assessments to determine whether and how the rooftop can be utilised for solar generation.
The initiative could also introduce real-time energy monitoring and reporting at the venue, while enhancing Sher-e-Bangla’s image as a sustainability-focused sporting institution. If found viable, the model could potentially be adapted for other suitable BCB facilities.
