Former minister Dipu Moni has been released on parole for 12 hours following the death of her husband, Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Tawfique Nawaz.
She was released from Munshiganj District Jail around 6am Thursday.
Dipu Moni’s daughter Tani Dipaboli visited her mother in jail on Wednesday afternoon. Later, she applied to the Munshiganj district administration for a four‑day parole, which was granted for 12 hours. During this time, Dipu Moni will attend her late husband’s funeral and janaza.
Barrister Tawfique Nawaz, 76, died Tuesday night while undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital in Gulshan (formerly United Hospital). He had long suffered from kidney and liver complications.
Dipu Moni’s lawyer said she will go to Dhaka’s Kalabagan after her release, where her husband’s body will be kept. Preparations are underway for the janaza at Gulshan Azad Mosque and burial at Banani graveyard.
The former minister was arrested on 19 August 2024 from Baridhara DOHS, following the fall of the Awami League government in the July mass uprising. She has since been held in Munshiganj Jail in connection with cases filed over that event.
