Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said the opposition’s absence from the committee proceedings on constitutional amendments will not create any complications, as opposition lawmakers will have the opportunity to participate when the proposed amendments are placed before parliament.
“The opposition will be in parliament when the constitutional amendment process comes before the House. So, their absence from the committee’s proceedings will not create any complications,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while responding to journalists after a reception for meritorious students at the Mingram School ground in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah on Tuesday afternoon.
Asked whether Bangladesh’s high commissions and embassies were neglecting Bangladeshi prisoners held abroad, Asaduzzaman said allegations against any official would be investigated and legal action taken if the claims were found to be true.
However, he cautioned against making blanket allegations, saying Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in different countries are working closely to support expatriate Bangladeshis.
Commenting on the execution of two Bangladeshi nationals in Saudi Arabia, the law minister described the incident as deeply distressing.
He said it would be inappropriate to comment on the legal basis of the executions without examining the relevant documents.
“It is a very unfortunate incident for us. Without examining the documents, it would not be appropriate to comment on the legal basis on which the Saudi government sentenced our two citizens to death,” he said.
The minister added that the rationale and legality of the Saudi government’s decision, along with issues relating to the Vienna Convention, needed to be reviewed before any assessment could be made.
Earlier, Asaduzzaman attended a reception as the chief guest for meritorious students of Mingram Secondary School in Abaipur union of Shailkupa upazila.
Students, officials from the upazila education department, and leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations were also present.
