Bangladesh women’s cricket is set to enter a new phase as the Bangladesh Cricket Board moves closer to starting a High Performance unit for female players.
Preparations for the women’s HP programme have been going on for several months. The board is now ready to make it official. A formal announcement is expected very soon.
The programme is likely to begin in May. It will run for four to five months. Selected players will stay in camps and work on skills. Trainers and physios will be part of the setup. The board plans to provide full support and facilities.
The structure will follow the men’s High Performance model. Cricketers who performed well at Under-19 level will be given priority. The board is also looking at talented players under the age of 26 or 27.
The goal is long term growth. The board wants players who can serve the national team for six to seven years. Around 15 to 20 cricketers are expected to be part of the unit.
This step comes after a strong showing by the national women’s team in the T20 World Cup Qualifier. The team went through a demanding schedule and handled it well.
Bangladesh did not qualify directly for the Women’s T20 World Cup. They had to play the qualifiers to book a place in the main event.
The team responded with confidence. Led by Nigar Sultana Joty, Bangladesh finished the qualifier unbeaten and lifted the title.
The Women’s T20 World Cup will take place in England from June 12 to July 5.
