Voting is underway in the highly anticipated Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election. The much-discussed poll began on Monday morning at 10am and will continue until 4pm, marking an important day in the country’s cricket administration.
Despite weeks of debate, speculation, and legal complications, the election began right on schedule. The councillors on the final voter list have been casting their ballots to choose their preferred candidates.
So far, candidates contesting for director positions have expressed satisfaction with the overall voting environment, describing it as calm and well-organised.
The run-up to the election was not without uncertainty. Legal complexities and procedural delays had raised concerns about whether the vote would be held on time. However, following a court decision and a thorough verification process, the much-talked-about and often controversial BCB election started as planned.
A total of 156 councillors are eligible to vote in this year’s election to decide the board’s new leadership. Among the 25-member Board of Directors, 23 will be elected through voting, while the remaining two positions will be nominated by the National Sports Council.
So far, six directors have already been elected unopposed. In the Dhaka Division, candidate Abdullah Al Fuad Redwan attempted to withdraw from the race at the last moment, but his withdrawal could not be accepted as the deadline for nomination withdrawal had already expired.
As a result, former cricketers Aminul Islam Bulbul and Nazmul Abedin Fahim are widely expected to win their seats from the division without much competition.
The results for the Board of Directors are set to be announced at 6pm. Later in the evening, the newly elected directors will vote to elect the BCB President and Vice-President, with the process scheduled to begin at 7:30pm. The final results are expected to be declared around 9pm, concluding an eventful day in Bangladesh cricket’s administrative calendar.
After weeks of uncertainty, today’s election marks a turning point for the BCB, as the organisation looks ahead to forming a new leadership team that will steer the future of Bangladesh cricket.
