The government has decided in-principal to form a Police Commission aimed at transforming the Bangladesh Police into a more professional, accountable and people-oriented force by freeing it from political influence.
Officials say the proposed body is expected to strengthen professionalism within the force and improve public trust in law enforcement.
Welcoming the move, the Bangladesh Administrative Service Association (BASA) said such initiatives are essential for building modern and democratic state institutions.
In a statement, the association noted that its members have long played a crucial role in the country’s governance structure, yet many officers faced intense political pressure under the previous fascist government, which they claim undermined administrative professionalism.
BASA stressed that ensuring good governance and accountability requires public administration free from political interference, bias and undue influence.
The association said that, despite legal mandates, administrative officers frequently encounter pressures, conflicting instructions and attempts at intervention that affect their neutrality, efficiency and public credibility.
Amid these realities, the association called for the formation of an independent Administrative Service Commission, modelled on the proposed Police Commission, to ensure professional integrity and protect officers from external interference.
BASA said the commission should be a statutory, independent body responsible for recruitment, promotion and disciplinary matters of the administration cadre.
The proposed commission, the association added, should include professionals from diverse backgrounds to uphold transparency and enhance the administrative service’s institutional strength.
