The Entomology Division of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has identified the harmful insect ‘Jumping plant bug (Halticus minutus Reuter)’ for the first time in Bangladesh.
Scientists recently observed the species described as a new exotic insect in pointed gourd fields at Abdulpur, Jashore Sadar in Jashore, reads a press release.
This marks the first recorded occurrence of the pest in the country.
“The pest was found damaging pointed gourd crop by sucking sap from leaves”, said BARI Entomologists.
They noted that the infestation is currently under control.
However, they urged farmers not to panic, as BARI has already developed an effective management strategy against the pest.
Chief Scientific Officer and Head of the Entomology Division of BARI Nirmal Kumar Dutta, advised farmers to avoid indiscriminate use of toxic chemical insecticides, as this could kill beneficial insects that naturally help control the pest.
He recommended clean cultivation practices, regular crop monitoring, and need-based application of the biopesticide ‘spinosad’ or other less toxic new-generation chemical insecticides in consultation with agricultural extension personnel.
It is noted that the insect is widely distributed across Asia and the Pacific region. It is considered a major pest in parts of Asia, particularly in sweet potato and soybean crops, and has also been reported in various vegetables including cucurbits, beans, and cabbage.
