The Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB)’s fact-check initiative BanglaFact has identified as false a widely circulated social media post that attributed a fabricated quote to Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Shafiqul Alam.
In a report published on Saturday, BanglaFact stated that a photo card from the newspaper Kaler Kantho quoted Shafiqul Alam as saying: “The agreements with the United States are essentially confidential. Even though we know many things, we cannot speak now. However, no agreement has been made by compromising Bangladesh’s interests. No military pact has been signed either.”
Upon verification, BanglaFact found that the press secretary never made such a statement. The quote attributed to him is false and being circulated to mislead the public, the fact-check team confirmed.
BanglaFact is a project run by PIB that actively debunks rumours, fake news, and disinformation campaigns spread through social media.
