A Bangladeshi expatriate worker was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, family members said.

The deceased, Dipali Begum, 34, was the daughter of Sheikh Muba from East Shaleipur Munshirchar village under Char Harirampur union in Charbhadrasan upazila of Faridpur.

She died on Wednesday night at a hospital in Beirut while undergoing treatment after sustaining injuries in an attack on the building where she lived.

According to reports, the residential building in Beirut came under attack during the evening. Dipali Begum was injured in the strike and later admitted to hospital, where she died while receiving treatment.

Dipali worked in Lebanon as a housekeeper. She was one of five siblings.

Her younger sister, Laju Begum, said Dipali had gone to Lebanon two years ago in search of livelihood. She last spoke with the family on 8 April, the morning of the incident day.

Laju said Dipali had recently moved from the Chur area to Beirut along with her employer’s family due to escalating violence, but the area later came under attack.

She also said the family was informed of Dipali’s death on Friday.

Her body remains in the custody of Lebanese authorities.

Local Union Parishad member Sheikh Falu confirmed the incident, saying the family is extremely poor and had sent Dipali abroad to improve their financial condition. He expressed sorrow over the death and urged authorities to bring her body back to Bangladesh as soon as possible.

Charbhadrasan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Suraia Momtaz said the administration has been informed and efforts are underway through diplomatic channels to repatriate the body.
