A Bangladeshi man was injured in a landmine explosion near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban on Friday evening.
The victim, Abdul Jabbar, 52, was injured around 6pm in the Pinechhari area of Dochhari Union.
He was immediately taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where he is receiving emergency treatment.
Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mazharul Islam Chowdhury confirmed the incident, saying that a local had sustained severe injuries in a landmine blast.
“I have been informed about the accident, but full details are not yet clear,” he added.
Local sources said Jabbar, a resident of the area, had gone to cut trees near Pinechhari Point, located between international border pillars 51 and 52, when he accidentally triggered a hidden landmine. The explosion severed his left ankle, leaving him critically injured.
Sources further reported that large parts of Myanmar’s Rakhine State remain under the control of the Arakan Army, a rebel group inMyanmar.
The group has reportedly planted mines at several border points, posing a persistent threat to people and livestock on the Bangladeshi side.
