Sri Lanka is a familiar opponent for Bangladesh. Just a couple of months ago, Bangladesh won a T20I series against them. Now, Litton Das and his teammates will face Sri Lanka again, but this time the stage is the Asia Cup. Even though the venue has changed, Bangladesh is ready to take on their “familiar rivals.”
The Bangladesh-Sri Lanka match will start at 8:30 PM Bangladesh time on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. A win will give Bangladesh a strong position in Group B to qualify for the Super Four. A loss, however, could affect their net run rate. Beyond statistics, the rivalry built over the past 7–8 years adds extra intensity to the clash.
The Bangladesh-Sri Lanka rivalry gained a new dimension after the “Naagin” celebration in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. It became widely discussed alongside their on-field battles. The 2023 World Cup group match incident involving a “timed out” also made headlines worldwide. So, fans have plenty to focus on beyond cricketing reasons.
The players, however, are focused only on winning. Pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib said in a press conference that victory is the main priority.
“Rivalry will always exist,” he said. “In any tournament, winning is the key, whether it is Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, or Pakistan. Previous wins against Sri Lanka will give confidence. Winning boosts your performance on the field.”
Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka also spoke at a press conference. He said the rivalry mainly exists among fans. “For us, it is just a good and challenging contest. We want to give other teams, including Bangladesh, a good game,” he said.
From a tactical perspective, Bangladesh will rely on the opening pair of Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon to set the batting tone. Tanzid played a match-winning 76 in the recent T20I series against Sri Lanka, which will inspire him. Both openers will face the challenge of Lankan pacers and off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana.
Theekshana has tough memories with Tanzid. In his 76-run innings, Tanzid hit a six over extra cover off the off-spinner, a shot that is still talked about. Captain Litton Das is in good form, scoring 59 off 39 balls against Hong Kong.
There is some concern about Tawhid Hridoy, who has not been in his best rhythm recently. In the first match, he scored 35* off 36 balls, but it was not an ideal T20I innings. He may struggle, especially against leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who has taken 40 wickets for Sri Lanka since the start of 2024. Most of these wickets came in the middle overs, which will challenge Bangladesh’s middle order.
At the end, Zaker Ali and Shamim Hossain Patwari are names to rely on for Bangladesh. The Abu Dhabi pitch favours pacers early on, as Taskin Ahmed and Tanzim Sakib have showed. However, Rishad Hossain bowled inconsistently in the previous match. Against Sri Lanka, mistakes could be costly.
So far, the two teams have played 20 T20Is. Bangladesh has won eight, and Sri Lanka has won twelve.
