India’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval on Friday underscored strong governance is fundamental to nation-building and national security, enabling countries to fulfil public aspirations and achieve developmental goals.
Speaking at an event marking Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), Doval noted governance is increasingly being challenged by the growing awareness and expectations of ordinary citizens, reports NDTV.
He said, “The common man has become more aware and aspirational, has higher expectations from the state, and the state has a vested interest in keeping him satisfied.”
The NSA pointed out weak governance often leads to instability, referring to changes of regimes through non-institutional means in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and other countries.
Doval remarked, “The power of a nation lies in governance. The government’s work through institutions and, in the task of nation-building, the most important people are those who build and nurture these institutions.”
Praising the governance model of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “India is having an orbital shift- from a certain type of governance, from a certain type of government and societal structure, but also its place in the global orders.”
Doval further highlighted several institutional reforms initiated by the present government to curb systemic corruption, hinting that additional steps could be forthcoming.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining clarity of vision during times of change. He said, “Whenever a change comes, the most important thing is your clarity of vision and not getting blinded by the dust and storms, not getting overawed by the noise and the threats, and not getting subdued by the adversities.”
As part of his lecture, Doval underscored true governance must also ensure protection, safety, and equality for women.
He stated, “Empowerment of women is necessary for good governance in the modern new world. And, I think, that it is not only important to have good laws, good structures and good systems, but more importantly, to implement them effectively.”
Highlighting the transformative potential of technology, the NSA said modern governance must use technology to enhance transparency, accountability, and service delivery to citizens while also guarding against cyber and other emerging threats.
Doval added, “We have to exploit the technology that ensures greater transparency, accountability, and delivery of service to the common man, and then connect.”
He concluded by reiterating effective governance, rooted in institutional integrity and technological adaptability, remains the foundation of a strong and resilient nation.
