A campaign to eliminate single-use plastics from 100 schools across Bangladesh’s Dhaka division was launched Thursday following a tripartite agreement between government, corporate, and environmental groups. The “Single Use Plastic Free Model School Campaign” aims to transform selected schools in 13 districts and promote environmentally conscious lifestyles among students.
The initiative will establish Eco-Awareness Green Clubs in all participating institutions. Students will manufacture eco-friendly alternatives including paper pens, paper bags, gift wraps, and origami products. The program includes organized awareness activities and will track progress through systematic quarterly evaluations.
Project organizers estimate direct involvement of approximately 5,000 students, with indirect reach extending to over 50,000 parents and community members. The memorandum of understanding delineates clear responsibilities: environmental organization Green Savers will manage project planning and execution, while BSRM Foundation provides financial and infrastructural support through its corporate social responsibility framework. The Department of Environment–Dhaka Region will contribute policy direction and government backing for student-made product exhibitions.
“The use of single-use plastics is today one of the major causes of global environmental catastrophe,” said Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman NDC, Director General of the Department of Environment, who served as chief guest. “If we can teach plastic-free living starting from important places like schools, the future generation itself will lead the change. This initiative will be a significant milestone in our journey towards environmental protection.”
The launch event was chaired by Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Director of the Department of Environment–Dhaka Region. Special guests included Additional Director General Md. Ziaul Haque. Also in attendance were Green Savers Chief Executive Officer Ahsan Roni, BSRM Group of Companies Director Sabin Amir, and officials from all three organizations.
