BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said on Tuesday that Bangladesh will maintain cordial relations with India regardless of which political party holds power in the neighbouring country.
Speaking to journalists at Zia Udyan in the capital, he emphasised that BNP’s belief in independence and sovereignty ensures that the bilateral relationship remains consistent irrespective of who is elected in India.
He further extended his congratulations to the leaders chosen by the Indian electorate.
Gayeshwar told these followed a ceremony and accompanied by thousands of party activists, paid tribute at the graves of the late president Ziaur Rahman and the late former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
The event was organised by Dhaka District and South Keraniganj BNP leaders to celebrate Nipun Roy Chowdhury taking her oath as a Member of Parliament (MP) in a reserved seat for women.
Addressing diplomatic relations, Gayeshwar declined to comment on the internal affairs of India, asserting that his focus is on the national interests of Bangladesh.
He noted that while the current government assumed responsibility during a period of crisis, these challenges would be met to restore “good days” to the nation.
Gayeshwar also stressed that the government must work to implement the aspirations of the people and prioritise women’s leadership.
He remarked that the country is no longer under a one-party system and the government cannot act at will, noting that the views and criticisms of the opposition must be valued in the governance of the country.
During the same programme, Nipun expressed her gratitude to the party Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for her evaluation and appointment to the reserved seat.
She also thanked the activists and supporters of Dhaka District for their steadfast support during recent political movements.
“I intend to honour the trust and faith the prime minister has placed in me. My future politics will be dedicated to the welfare of the common people,” she said, adding that the nation’s foreign policy would be formulated strictly in consideration of the people’s interests.
The event was attended by several key figures, including Dhaka District BNP leaders Khorshed Alam, Mujadded Ali Babu, and Ashiqur Rahman Swapon; Najmul Hasan Abhi and Asaduzzaman of Swechchhashebok Dal; Mokarram Hossain Sajjad of Jubo Dal; Pavel Molla and Tamij Uddin of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal; and Hira Hossain of Tanti Dal.
