A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered that Nassa Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Majumder be shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed with Vatara Police Station in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after police submitted an application seeking to show him arrested in the case.
Defence counsel Saidur Islam confirmed the development, saying Majumder is already facing more than 20 cases.
The application was filed by Vatara Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Hafizur Rahman on 11 March, stating that investigators found evidence linking Majumder to incidents of stabbing and shooting carried out with intent to kill during the July anti-discrimination movement.
Investigators also alleged that he provided financial support and other forms of assistance to co-accused involved in the attacks.
According to the case statement, the incident dates back to July 2024 when violence broke out during protests following remarks by then prime minister Sheikh Hasina regarding the anti-discrimination movement on 16 July.
The complainant, Rohan, alleged that on 18 July both named and unidentified attackers opened fire on him and his friends, leaving them seriously injured.
Majumder was earlier arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the capital’s Gulshan area on the night of 1 October 2024 and remains in jail.
