A court has ordered the investigating officer to submit an investigation report without delay in the case filed over the attack on the motorcade of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in Rangunia, Chattogram.

The court expressed dissatisfaction over the prolonged probe and directed the officer to expedite the investigation.

The directive was issued on Sunday by Judge Sayma Afrin Hima of Chattogram Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-1 after reviewing the progress of the probe.

Earlier, on 2 October last year, the court ordered a reinvestigation in the same case after a gap of seven years, as the case filed over the 2017 attack on the BNP secretary general’s motorcade in Rangunia had initially been dismissed based on a police report.

Enamul Haque, president of the Chattogram Bar Association and the case plaintiff, said Chhatra League and Jubo League activists attacked Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s motorcade in Rangunia in 2017.
He said fear prevented others from filing a case, prompting him to lodge the case himself two days after the incident.

According to him, the court later dismissed the case after police submitted a report claiming the allegations were not proven, following which he filed a revision petition with the district judge’s court, adding that the case remained unheard for six to seven years before the court eventually ordered a reinvestigation after hearing the revision.

The BNP secretary general was on his way to distribute relief among landslide victims in Rangamati.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and at least six other leaders were injured.

Several vehicles in the convoy were also vandalised.

After the attack, senior BNP leaders cancelled the relief programme and returned to Chattogram city.

They later held a press conference at the city’s press club detailing the incident.

Enamul Haque subsequently filed the case with a Chattogram court.
