In an age ruled by Spotify and instant downloads, vinyl records were meant to fade into history. After all, why dedicate shelf space to music when entire libraries now live comfortably in our pockets? Yet, amid this wave of digital convenience, something essential has been lost – the physical connection to music. Quietly, a new generation is trying to reclaim it.
Many of us grew up watching our parents or grandparents carefully stack vinyl records on shelves, treasuring albums by their favourite artists. Records were exchanged among friends much like playlists are shared today, but with a sense of anticipation and effort that feels almost foreign now. Music was not just heard; it was prepared for.
For Tariq Haque, 27, vinyl remains a deeply personal ritual. “There’s a certain joy in playing music on a turntable,” he said. “Spotify gives you endless options, but it lacks the physical involvement – placing the record, setting up the speakers and truly committing to listening.” For him, vinyl turns music into an experience rather than background noise.
That sentiment is shared by many who are drawn to the tangibility and mindfulness that vinyl demands. Ariful Islam, 25, associates turntables with memories of his childhood. “My parents used to play music in the living room,” he recalled. “My dad loved Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson and the Eagles. We still have those vinyl records. Even though I use my phone when I’m on the move, it never feels the same as playing those songs on vinyl.” From the careful setup to the warm, textured sound, the experience is unmistakably different.
Vinyl, however, is not an easy passion to maintain. A decent turntable can cost over Tk 50,000, with speakers adding to the expense. Individual records range from Tk 2,000 to Tk 10,000, depending on rarity and artist. It is a commitment.
Still, vinyl refuses to fade. In a world obsessed with speed, skipping and scrolling, it offers something increasingly rare: presence. For those who truly love music, the classics don’t just survive. They keep spinning.
