Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement to sign Tottenham defender Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero in a deal that could be worth up to €40 million (£34.4m), according to sources cited by ESPN.
The 28-year-old centre-back has been a long-term target for Atlético and manager Diego Simeone. He was widely expected to leave Tottenham during the summer.
Atlético will pay an initial €35 million, with a further €5 million available in add-ons, according to the sources.
Romero spent five seasons at Tottenham, including his first campaign on loan, and was appointed club captain in 2025.
The Argentina international was a key part of the side that won the 2022 World Cup and Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024. He also made seven appearances for Argentina at this summer’s World Cup.
Romero began his career with Argentine club Belgrano before moving to Italy, where he played for Genoa and Atalanta. He joined Tottenham permanently in August 2021.
During his time in north London, Romero helped Spurs win the 2025 Europa League. However, Tottenham endured a difficult 2025-26 campaign as they battled to avoid relegation.
