Singer Asif Akbar is making a notable return to the silver screen with a new film soundtrack, marking a first-of-its-kind collaboration with legendary singer-songwriter Kabir Suman. For the first time in his career, Suman has written and composed songs for a Bangladeshi feature film.
The songs will appear in the upcoming family drama ‘Jhamela’, directed by Yamin Ilan. The film features six songs in total, with three penned and composed by Kabir Suman. Music arrangements have been made by Ujjal Sinha and Azmir Babu, while all six tracks have been sung solo by Asif Akbar.
The collaboration builds on a long-standing musical connection between the two artistes. Asif Akbar, who has admired Suman’s work since childhood, previously recorded several of his compositions that were well received by audiences. However, Jhamela marks the first time Suman’s songwriting enters Bangladeshi cinema, making the project significant for both musicians.
Asif Akbar continues his tradition of voicing an entire film soundtrack alone, a feat he earlier achieved in films such as ‘Rani Kuthir Baki Itihash’ and ‘Gohiner Gaan’.
Produced by Dia Rais under the banner of Dia Productions, Jhamela features a large ensemble cast including Dolly Zahur, Shyamal Mawla, Tanjika Amin, Rashed Mamun Apu and Kazi Nawshaba Ahmed, among others.
Director Yamin Ilan described the film as an original Bangladeshi family drama, with shooting currently underway in Dhaka and Gazipur. The makers are aiming for an Eid release later this year.
