Speculation has arisen in Bangladesh cricket circles about the potential appointment of Sanath Jayasuriya as the national team’s batting coach. However, no official confirmation has been provided on this matter.
Current batting coach Mohammad Ashraful confirmed that he will continue in his role until February 2027. Ashraful, a former captain of the Bangladesh team, was appointed interim batting coach at the end of last year. Under his guidance, the performances of the Test and T20 batsmen have been widely praised, leading the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to extend his contract. His tenure now officially runs from February 2026 to February 2027.
Recently, Jayasuriya stepped down from his role as Sri Lanka’s head coach, and reports suggest he has visited Bangladesh and given interviews, sparking rumours that he could join the national team as batting coach.
Ashraful, however, emphasised that his current contract remains in place. “I’ve seen the news online about Jayasuriya. I cannot confirm anything about that. The board would be the proper authority to comment. I already have a one-year contract as batting coach for the men’s national team, effective until February 2027. I also worked during the Ireland series in November, but my official tenure continues through February,” he said.
