Playback singer AR Ameen, son of Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, sustained minor injuries in a road accident in Chennai on Monday, reports Hindustan Times.
Ameen later clarified that he was seated in the passenger seat when the accident occurred, contrary to some reports that said he was driving.
In a statement shared on Instagram Stories, Ameen said he was travelling to the airport with a friend when their car was involved in a minor accident.
“Yesterday, on the way to the airport, I was in the passenger seat of my friend’s car when we got into a minor accident. By God’s grace, everyone involved is safe and okay,” he wrote.
He also thanked his family, friends and well-wishers for their prayers and support.
Ameen’s sister, singer-composer Khatija Rahman, also addressed the incident on social media.
She said her brother was travelling in the passenger seat while his friend was driving.
According to Khatija, the accident occurred after a vehicle ahead of them moved forward despite a red signal, resulting in a minor collision.
“By God’s grace, Ameen, his friend, and the occupant of the other vehicle are all safe,” she said, while urging media outlets to verify details with the family to avoid unnecessary concern.
However, the police account differs from Ameen and Khatija’s statements.
According to police, Ameen was driving a luxury SUV towards Guindy with his friend at around 3:30am when it collided with a hatchback operated by a cab aggregator.
The hatchback reportedly entered the main lane from the left side of the road, leading to the collision.
Ameen, his friend and the hatchback driver sustained minor injuries and received basic first aid.
No fatalities were reported, and both vehicles were seized by police.
Cases have been registered under Sections 337 and 279 of the Motor Vehicles Act, relating to causing injury and rash or negligent driving.
Ameen concluded his statement by thanking everyone who reached out to him, saying their “love, care, and support” meant more to him than he could express.
