The Election Commission (EC) resumed its fourth day of hearings on appeals filed over cancellation of nomination papers for the upcoming 13th national election.
Proceedings began at 10am on Tuesday in the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka. Hearings will continue until 5pm.
The commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, is reviewing the appeals filed against the decisions made by returning officers during scrutiny.
Under the fourth day schedule, the EC will hear appeals numbered 211 to 280 in line with the previously announced order.
On Monday, during the third day of hearings, 41 candidates had their candidacies restored. EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told the media that a total of 71 appeals were heard that day. Of those, 41 were accepted, 25 rejected, four kept pending, while one appeal from Pabna-2 could not be taken up.
According to the EC officials, 150 candidates have so far regained candidature over the first three days of hearings — 51 on the first day, 58 on the second day, and 41 on the third day.
This election cycle has seen a total of 645 appeals lodged with the commission regarding returning officers’ scrutiny decisions. Earlier, returning officers declared 723 nomination papers invalid on 4 January during scrutiny.
